Portable Two Way Radios: The History and Present Day Uses

Are you thinking about purchasing portable two way radios and wondering if they will be useful for your business? Two way radios, also known as walkie talkies, have a long history of being useful in many different situations. While the two way radios of today are certainly of a better quality than their predecessors, the concept remains the same and has remained useful for good reasons.

The History

The technology for portable two way radios was developed in the early 20th century. One of the first applications of the technology in the United States was by the Bayonne, New Jersey Police Department in 1933. By World War II, the United States was using two way radios extensively for important war time communications. These early two way radios sent signals over just one radio frequency and required skilled operators to send messages in Morse Code.

Today

While the concept of communicating with portable two way radios remains the same today as it did 100 years ago, the technology has changed and several important improvements have occurred. First, the need for skilled operators and knowledge of Morse Code are long gone. People now communicate over two way radios the same way that they do over cell phones, that is in their usual conversational language. Second, the two way radios and their responders are much smaller and much more affordable. This allows for greater use for this important technology. Further, the technology is more secure. People no longer have to transmit information over one single radio frequency.

Portable two way radios are important tools in large variety of situations. People often wonder why two way radios are still important since cellular telephones are so readily available, reasonably priced and widely used. Mobile two way radios are still important because they offer a few advantages over traditional cell phones. With a two way radio you can push a button and be quickly connected to one person, a small group of people or even one hundred people. Two way radios are also designed to be used in extreme, emergency and rugged situations. Their use is more reliable in these types of situations and there is less of a risk that a user will be stranded without reliable communication.

Looking for a two way radio and other resources?

Also, they are less expensive to operate. Users pay a low monthly fee with no airtime costs and no per minute usage fee, unlike cell phones which can become expensive. So, while some cell phones are now offering push to talk and other traditional two way radio features they are still not as reliable in extreme situations and cell phones are usually more expensive to operate than two way radios.

Two way radio technology was developed over 100 years ago. While the technology has been greatly improved over the past century, the concept remains the same. More importantly, the concept remains widely used in very important business, government and emergency situations. Portable two way radios are a great technological advance that continues to be improved upon for important reasons in our society and should be carefully considered as an alternative to cell phones in certain situations.
